Translations depository

This is an original feature, and I chose to evoke it here instead of the Request on sourceforge, because I have to explain the philosophy.

---------
Example (fiction):

I belong to the French swimming federation. The French swimming federation does not have sufficient organization to maintain a multilingual website. All national swimming federations worldwide have only monolingual websites, and it is the best they can do.

I write an article about how my hometown is building a new swimming pool. I estimate it is interesting only to locals. I write an article about how my hometown is organizing the next swimming world championship. This time I estimate all national federations should know about the schedules, addresses, etc.

What I do is that I go to a tiki site, where I copy/paste my text, and i request translations. On the other side, people who are concerned will come and pick up the translations, to copy/paste them in their own monolingual website.

-----------

Explanation:

Most cms start from the principle that it is the articles actually published in the cms that will be translated. This new feature is more like a translations market, for articles that are to be published elsewhere.

This does not contradict the present efforts at multilingualism development, and indeed I suspect it would be a mere adaptation of what has already been done. But, in the user interface, it would be presented as a different function.

Nice idea.

Open to the crowd:

Is there enough people in the Tiki community to open a translateme.tikiwiki.org ?
Who has the available resources to host such a tiki site?

I am not sure to understand
What do you mean by "i request translations"?
"people who are concerned will come and pick up the translations" do you mean that there is a multilingual site?

Translation process(processes) needs to be defined. Nothing has been done yet, and when I see how the translation is going on doc.tw.org, I admire the translators' job and courage.

If you are ready to specify and develop you are welcome. A place to start can be MultilingualStep2

No, I cannot develop anything, it would take me way too long to learn php.

What I can do is talk about it from a translator's point of view.

I think the swimming federation example is clear enough. It would be exactly the translation features that you're developping, except on that occasion it would be presented to the user as a files depository, for publications elsewhere.

I sincerely think there is a need for that, especially in organisations that are only occasionally international, but also in organisations that have tu publish text elsewhere than on their website. In books for instance.

And as as far as your work here is concerned, Sylvie, I must admit I am very far from having the time to follow at your pace.

I think this "translation depository" feature would be an ideal opportunity to integrate tiki with openoffice.

Example: I am a very basic user of computers, I understand only how to write with openoffice writer. I have written an interesting article, and I want it translated: I upload it to tiki site.

Then more experienced users can translate it from within tiki. And export into a target language openoffice file.
