Invalid Password problem

I"m a noobie at all of this so I request some patience ;-)

I am trying to configure LDAP authentication with Tiki 2.0. I am running on php 5.1.6 on apache 2.2.3 on CentOS. I have confirmed that I am getting a login/logout in Active Directory (Win 2003) with my settings. However, Tiki keeps telling me I have an "Invalid password".

I have run several tests
First I entered credentials in this fashion "DOMAIN/firstname.lastname" - I have selected the option to "Create user if not in Tiki?"
AD confirmed that I had a login/logout - and it was not ANONYMOUS - however - Tiki still told me "invalid Password"

Second test -
I created a user firstname.lastname within tiki - then attempted to login as this user - No luck - I do not know if this even worked in AD.

Do I need to create a user "DOMAIN/firstname.lastname" in tiki in order for this to work? I have 500 - 1000 users that could be using Tiki - and I seriously don't want to create all these accounts in tiki - nor can I manage this as new users come into Active Directory.

So -2 questions - 1_ it appears that the "create user if not in tiki" is not working
and - to bypass that - do I need to include the domain name - since that is how I have to login.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
