Advanced use of calendars

I am attempting to migrate an active group off meetup.com and would like to use tiki for the group. There are several features that are a great improvement over that platform, but I am having difficulty with replacing some of the calendar functionality. I have a test installation of tikiwiki-4.2 and would like advice on manipulating the calendar to serve the function.

I can see repeat event functionality will need some work to improve the options to allow scheduling an event every n weeks on the same day as well as every week, and to allow scheduling on the n-th Saturday every month etc. but otherwise the calendar functions, by having multiple calendars displayable will greatly increase the usability.

I have no real wish to re-invent the wheel, but there are very valid reasons for migrating from an otherwise efficient platform. Since I do not wish to re-invent, I thought I would ask if anyone has already done this. I can't find any documentation to help.

  • Is it possible for a member to "watch" a specific event and so receive email reminders if they wish?
  • Is it possible for users to be able to "register interest" in an event, and/or series of repeated events?
  • Has anyone already looked at improving repeat event functionality?

Thanks for taking the time to read. All advice gratefully received.

It would be great to have these!

Watch will be easy because that feature exists elsewhere in Tiki and it just needs to be ported to calendars, along with comments.

Register interest: should be "interested", "attending", "organizing", etc.

For recurring improvements: just needs to be done!

I absolutely support this - email reminders would flesh this project out phenomenally well.

That being said, until there's a setup for reminders, does anyone know of a workaround? What I'm looking to do is email reminders of calendar events a few hours or so before the event...I've thought about using Google Calendars, but I haven't been able to figure out how to 1) Integrate Google Calendars directly with Tikiwiki or 2) Automatically export the Tikiwiki Cal data to Google.

If anyone has a solution for me, I'd sure appreciate your advice!

I too was kind of hoping there was an existing workaround that would allow the group to get some use out of calendars while the functionality is written, but it sounds like that is not so.

I shall await further advice while I get my busy team activated. But it looks like we will have to write it ourselves.

That's unfortunate...I have not yet learned PHP (tinkered a bit, but no real coding) and life isn't going to grant me the opportunity to learn it any time soon - certainly not soon enough :p

A huge thankyou to Sylvie for the work done for the www.eastmidlandsroleplayers.com/tiki site which allows authorised users to easily add themselves as a participant.

This has made a great difference to the usability of the calendar event for members to "RSVP" to an event without having to edit the event.
