Image galleries won't upload - upgrade from 2.4 to 5.1

I successfully upgraded from 2.4 to 5.1 at http://www.jacmus-prime.net last weekend.

I've just come across a couple of small problems with the Image Galleries feature.

I can't upload anymore :-( When using Firefox it says the upload is successful but then never uploads the image, and in explorer I just get a white page.

I've also had an issue with image plugin where the image would not show and after I kept trying to redo it it then put the word "image" on my page.... I decided to leave that one go for 24 hours and now it works again. No idea why it wouldn't work last night - I tried everything to get it working!

All my images are stored in the database (which I ran the conversion program on during the install dialogue).

I really like the image galleries feature and will be very saddened when its no longer a feature of wiki tiki :-( I understand that I could use the file galleries but it doesn't have the same features or look for the images it uploads.

I am also having similar issues with file galleries and can not create a new gallery or upload and received a tiki error page - but I have checked everything it suggested.

I've not experienced any other issues with the upgrade all other modules are working find and I've even imported new cvs menu files etc

I have already changed my database type during the install and I'm not getting any strange character problems (decoding issues).

It's definitely a character set issue, but I don't know specifically what the official course of action should be. I just changed my database character set to UTF8 and that cleared up the problem. If you look in the database, I'm willing to bet your images are actually safely stored in the relevant tables but something goes wrong in the process that takes the image data and converts it into a binary file.

Honestly, I think the best solution is to not use the database to store files unless you have a really good reason for doing so.

Well I have changed all tables now to UTF8 by downloading and find and replacing. Had to import by using three files though as the data was too big for the import restrictions used by my host.

It hasn't changed anything though - I still have the same problems so again, I don't think its an encoding issue as I'm not getting any strange characters... has to be something else. Other modules also don't appear to be writing to the database either, such as the quiz module and I can no longer see the previous scores. File Gallery won't upload either and they are all changed now to utf8_general_ci

I've also tried moving the database stored images to a file directory and I get this..

Disabled Preference moved 0 images, 0 errors occured.

I've checked permission set-ups and they are all okay.. perhaps its something to do with the .htaccess? Or maybe some files didn't upload properly even though the ftp said they did?? I'll keep investigating.
