Editing or removing Forum sections

Hi all,

I have recently installed Tiki 20.x to understand its functionality. I am looking at Forums in particular and I wonder how to edit or delete a forum section, once created.

For example, I have recreated a few forums from the Community and I have numbered the sections for illustration purposes.

What if I want to rename those sections in the future? I can't seem to find the way to do it.

I am posting in this area as I believe there must be a way to do it, only I don't know how.

Thank you in advance,
fatiki

P.S. I have attached a file, not sure how to embed it here.

I also tried at https://demo.tiki.org/ the following versions

  • 15x
  • 18x
  • 19x

The Forum Admin structure looks virtually the same as in version 20x, so I could not find a way to delete or edit Forum sections either in there.

Prior to opening this topic I searched fairly extensively but I could not find anything regarding editing forum sections.

Hi Bernard, thank you very much for replying.

Let me show you what I see when going to the page you indicated by attaching a screenshot.

As far as I can tell, there's no way to see the sections. I can only see the forums.

According to your understanding, should I also see the two sections, "01 Announcements" and "02 Tiki Support" on that page?

Thanks again

I have had a look at the SQL structure for forums.

The field section is actually a text field containing, for each record, the text value inserted at the time of forum creation.

Forums Table

This would explain why I was having trouble trying to find a way to edit or delete the sections.

It seems rather ugly.

I confirm uglyness, but it seems that it's the way it was coded since years ago and no one improved it.
You can edit forum section names when you add (or edit) a forum as admin. (in the forum edit form)
Clunky, but works. An dyuo can cheat the sorting of sections (alphabetical by default) by means of prepending spaces in the name of each section as needed.
Welcome to Tiki, and welcome to see you helping, fatiki ;-)

Hey Xavier, thank you.

Yes, I worked out a couple of things with forums - indeed the way I have been playing with sections is, if I want to rename something I will do as you said.

It's a workaround but - conceptually - if you had a fairly substantial number of forums under a section, renaming that section would imply going through all the forums and re-assigning them.

As for the order:

I have seen that alphabetical is currently the only way to order sections - which can be okay for the management of some forums but not for others.

In that case, another workaround can be adding a number in front of the sections so that, for example for this forum, if you wanted to have Support as the first forum you would name the section renamed into 01 - Support and so on.

I fully understand that - given Tiki was engineered some 16 years ago - some elements might have seemed adequate at the time and then focus was put into developing certain features more than others: absolutely not a criticism of the development team. In fact, I think they have done a great job in developing Tiki into what it looks today (and I have only seen a few things).

Happy to help out for what I can, which at the moment does not include PHP, JS or Smarty skills I'm afraid.
