I'm not sure I understand your question. Use the upcoming_events module the same as any other... You can assign it as a module in your left or right column, or within a wiki page by using the {MODULE} plugin. It will show the next XX events from the calendar.
The Calendar filter is different — use it to filter specific Tiki events (blog posting, wiki pages being updated, etc.) from appearing in the calendar.
