406 Not acceptable - help!

New to TW - absolutely LOVE it on my localhost. Can't WAIT to get it going, but...

Upload complete, then I'm getting an error message:
"An appropriate representation of the requested resource /tiki-install.php could not be found on this server."

I've Googled, I've asked my webdev listserv, I've read the Apache manual...

Can't find anything.

I don't have access to Apache settings with my host, but could edit the .htaccess if someone could tell me what to add!

Also I'm not sure which files need to be chmoded; I do this via ftp, not command line.

Thanks.

Does the file tiki-install.php exist? Make sure you FTPed it correctly.

Tiki includes a base .htaccess file. By default, it is named, _htaccess — simply change the "_" to a "." and you should be all set.

You need to make the following directories writable:
../backups
../db
../dump
../files
../img/wiki
../img/wiki_up
../img/trackers
../modules/cache
../temp
../temp/cache
../templates_c
../templates
../styles
../maps
../whelp
../mods

Thanks rick-

Yup. I re-uploaded it anyway, but no change.

I did that, actually. I didn't remove _htaccess, because I didn't know if it was needed, but to get a .htaccess file in at the root level, I just copied that and changed the name.

I have a feeling the issue may be with my host, but I don't know what to ask him. I can't see that the 8MB cache limit would be a problem at this stage, and I expect this site to be very low volume anyway...

Thanks for that - I'll hang on to this bit for future use.

8MB won't be enough — 16MB is the recommeded minimum. See the requirements docs for details.

I've read that, and I'm happy to ask for it to be increased, but it won't make much difference if I can't even get past the installation.

So...

No other suggestions? It would be a shame to have to abandon TW at this stage for such a seeminly little thing.

As stated previously, I believe that your problem is a lack of memory. Please increase to match the minimum requirements and try again.

So I have to have 16MB just to INSTALL it?

Not necessarily. I have several Tiki installations running on servers with only 8MB of memory for PHP script execution. I haven't experienced any of the low-memory symptoms, and I've never gotten that error message that you're getting. These are low-traffic sites with mostly (but not all) simple pages.

Googling the error message turns up a lot of people with the same problem with other software including Wordpress, Joomla, vbulletin, etc. It seems to get down to server configuration, what Apache mods are turned on or off, etc. You mention googling already, but it still seems like maybe you can find some clues there, or compare the Apache configuration at your remote server with your local set up, etc.

You again! Thanks Gary. (You last posted to me on the Tikipedia page).

Well that's what I thought.

I'll have another go, maybe use different search terms.

Thanks for your help. Again biggrin
