Yes, these are the ways to make links on a case-by-case basis.

I guess the Hotwords feature does have a use, which is to make every instance of a hotword a link. But as your experience shows, that can result in overkill if a term is used repeatedly on a page. I assume there is no "official" way to make hotword exceptions.

But, doing a little experimenting, I found that you can put the wiki no-parse syntax (spelled out like this: tilde np tilde tilde slash np tilde) in the middle of a hotword and it'll look normal on the displayed page but the "invisible" characters in the middle of the word will prevent it from being recognized as a hotword by Tiki. Example: hotword. So you could use pick and ball in text and even if pick and ball are hotwords, these instances won't be. (See "reply" quote of this post to see the syntax in use.)
