Are the background image urls in your CSS file correct — i.e., something like url(styles/YOURTHEMENAME/roundedcornr_756847_grad.gif)? (As a matter of form, I put background images used by a theme in the theme's directory within styles/. This isn't strictly necessary, but helps to keep things organized. The main thing is that the urls are correct. If there is any question about the image addresses being correct, you can try using the full addresses for them (one, anyway, as a test). Or try entering the url to a background image directly in your browser to see if the path is correct.
Where did you add the div tags in module.tpl? I assume they'd go at the beginning and end of the file.
If you give the URL of your site, it would might be easier to find out what's going on.
