> The link from the name works fine, but the link from the picture is not formatted correctly, so it sends me to an unknown page. When I cursor over the name, the target page is listed as John+Doe. When I cursor over the picture, the target page is listed as John. I've tried using the nnn format in the link=, but then the target page is listed as ((John.

I believe that the link attribute requires a qualified URL (that is, no spaces) — not wiki syntax. You need to change it to:
