I do not think this is possible. I'm pretty sure that each Tiki installation requires its own database.
If you want to test your upgrade before going live, I suggest:
- Duplicate your existing database (for example: mydatabase_new).
- Install the Tiki 2.2 in a new subdirectory (for example: /tiki22/).
- Run the Tiki installer in the new subdirectory (/tiki22/tiki-install.php).
- When prompted for your database connection, use the new database (mydatabase_new).
- Proceed with the upgrade (that is, upgrade the mydatabase_new database from 1.9.x to 2.x).
You can then completely test the process, without touching your "real" site and database.
