You both are right! There seems to be a bug introduced in Tiki 3 requiring to have ajax enabled for spreadsheets to work without this issue you reported.
But in Tiki 4, enabling ajax makes no difference to me: the behavior you describe is always present, regardless of the ajax setting.
We need a coder to fix it...
