Printing Tiki Documentation

Hi team

I decided to have a real go at understanding Tiki better, so I decided to print off (or at least .PDF) the Tiki Material (http://doc.tiki.org/tiki-print_multi_pages.php?)

After 3 or 4 attempts, all I ever got was a browser still hung after an hour.

Maybe the doc server just needs more horsepower, but it seems that this will always be a large drain on your documentation server if everyone does it.

Whilst people are working on making it more efficient (there are a couple of bug/wish trackers open), more than a year has already elapsed so probably need something in the interim.

Maybe I missed it, but is there a monthly or quarterly dump or .PDF of the documentation set? That will save a lot of people hitting the doc server and also each individual having to reformat/restructure it?

Or is there a better way to get access to the whole set of documentation??

one possible temporary fix would be to stop users accessing the DOC server, and an admin doing the print once a quarter, and then pdf the output.

or give me admin rights, and I will do it for you - Tiki pastes incredibly well into Word 2010 ;-)

Hey Brian,
Great, I saw that you are planning to attend to the TikiFestBoston7!
That's the best place where you will be able to get access to the documentation site, discuss issues with it and potential solutions, etc.

Right now, it's not easy even for doc.t.o site admins to export the whole documentation structure (a few issues need to be resolved, it seems, with code to make it feasible)

Cheers and welcome to Tiki Community!

Comments on this topic of enabling print on sites with large document collections.

First, there is still a bug in the tiki-print_pages routine of tikilib when printing wiki pages with nested TOC and MAKETOC syntax. I have described the fix for that in other postings.

One site I maintain builds to a single document using structure-related pages. We create a monthly PDF file - currently at 719 pages - for download by the users, but also offer the ability to multiple-print the live docs as well. Our experience is that most users just download the PDFs rather than mess with tiki's multiple-print feature and making a local PDF file print.

You can see this at http://n1mm.hamdocs.com

Look in the >Files section for info about downloaded PDFs, and the >Documents section for the multiple-print feature.

This project has grown over the past year, and has almost doubled in size. We have abandoned two ISPs ( 1and1.com, GoDaddy.com ) that could not provide enough server horsepower and user memory needed to Multiple-Print the single doc. Oh, and ignore what your >PHPINFO screen tells you, those ISPs throttle the parms in their back rooms and your actual resources are much lower.

HI larryg, could you point me in the direction of that fix for mutiple pages print including TOC and MAKETOC syntax? I'm having trouble finding it.

Does it fix what I assume is a similar problem with BACKLINKS syntax?

I am not familiar with the backlinks issue, so cannot answer that question. I posted the fix in this forum back on 3 DEC 2009. I am about to upgrade to v7.1, so I will need to edit the tikilib.php file again. Let me know if you are interested - I will send you the changes for 6.x or 7.x

Hi larryg:

I'm also interested in that fix! (I didn't know that someone knew how to fix it)

For curiosity, why didn't you commit the fix to the subversion repositories of tiki code? (wiki way of doing most stuff in tiki development + communication in tikiwiki-devel list)

If interested (I hope so), see dev: Commit

Alternatively, I'll do my best to commit your fix (once I see that it works for me) to svn.
