The custom home feature isn't being maintained any more, so it probably hasn't been have gotten the code to produce the right title. About the feature being dropped (sometime soon), the thinking is that anything that can be done with custom home can be done with a wiki page or other standard feature, so custom home can be removed and code maintenance reduced.
I'm not sure what you mean about it being a problem to use a wiki page as the site home page. It doesn't have to be the same page as the wiki home.
