I think there's a kind of consensus that, generally speaking, it should be possible to replace single-purpose features like the FAQs with appropriately configured generic features like wiki pages or trackers. But nobody has actually figured out the details of how to do that, so it hasn't gotten past the idea stage, as far as I know.
In the meantime, the FAQs do work ok still, as Cornopean said, and they won't be removed until there is a good upgrade path using another method. Basically the same situation exists for the image gallery feature, which is expected to be replaced by file galleries at some point. I think also the Directory feature functions could be done with wiki pages, categories, and so on, but again this needs to be figured out, and in all of these cases it'd be best if there were a script in the install screens or admin pages that would migrate a site's old data to the new methods.
