Now that's been fun! It all worked out.
For removing the favicon I can now strongly recommend deleting the favicon file from the site's main folder - just taking the name out under look&feel of tiki's control pannels had no effect in my case.
Creating and uploading your own favicon files (testing favicons to see what works what doesn't) is great fun... but in the end just clearing the caches doesn't seem to bring the desired effect. One must not only clear the caches but also close and reopen the browser.
Anyway, all's peachy now!
