Hi, not being able to get tiki-admin.php seems to happen to a few people indeed 🙁
It's known that in several cases this is due to insufficient PHP memory_limit setting (which is by default 8 MB but you have to check for Yahoo). Tiki does bad in this area and asks 12 MB for comfort, 8 MB as minimum and 16 MB to be sure everything should work. It's the first thing to check.
Image galleries problems are much more frequent, you'll find similar problems all around. You can consider the two problems to be almost certainly unrelated. By default you're using GD and database storing so the directory structure shouldn't be the problem yet.
Try with small files (under one MB) then different file formats (png being ideal for testing).
