"status" is only available for trackerfields. Saorry.
For users you can achieve a similar behaviour by using groups.
Use Group inclusions to reduce the necessity to add users (ex: employees) to too many groups.
When employees or members leave and you need to keep them archieved for whatever reason, then move them from active to invisible groups, ex. groups which are notvisible by other users or groups despite admins.
