Hi,
I think banners are meant to be used for adds. I don't think that modifying header.tpl is dangerous. Except if you know Smarty you can't make it do "dangerous" things. The only protection you need is testing. If template compilation fails, it will be obvious, you'll rollback to the shipped version and try again
