[Tikiwiki-cvs/svn] SF.net SVN: tikiwiki:[58611] branches/15.x/templates/mail

Hi Geoff (cc dev list),

I am not sure how this is supposed to work but it does not make much
sense to me to add the same

\{$prefs.mail_template_custom_text\}

to every tpl, especially the subject ones ? ...

What would be the point to have the same text all over the mails in
subject and in the body too?

E.g. if I filled in "You can go to http://foo.bar for more information"
I would end up with e-mail notifications like this:

Subject: You can go to http://foo.bar for more informationWiki page renamed
You can go to http://foo.bar for more informationWiki page renamed by admin.

Date: 2016-05-18

That looks odd, doesn't it? Or what is the
\{$prefs.mail_template_custom_text\} supposed to be used for?

Thanks,
luci

Hi Luci

Yes, i thought the same but Geoff said it was something else, but then there were these commits to every single mail tpl - i also see all this being backported to 12.x (but not 14.x) which doesn't seem good... if it's some text to be added to all outgoing mails then it shouldn't be in all the tpls, adding it in the notificationlib (or wherever) php would be better surely...

But once again i don't have time to check more now, sorry...

All

Sorry I thought I had explained this before - but there is not anyway (that
I can think of) to avoid having the pref reference in each of the .tpl's
because the positioning is context dependent ie to make sure that it doesn't
matter if the pref is not set, whilst at the same time ensuring that the
text still scans in a sensible way when it is set, means that each .tpl has
to be looked at carefully to put the pref in one or more places in the
appropriate way.

Hope that now makes sense

G

PS sorry this is slow but having only just finished doing the Tiki15 set I
am now starting the Tiki12 backports as these will still have a long life,
will try and get round to Tiki14 eventually although I guess it will less of
a priority once 15.1 comes out

Hi Luci (replying back to dev list)

I started this 'customisation' project some while ago (meaning I've been a
bit slow!!) and I actually added the new pref before we branched for
Tiki15, and there were a few emails exchanged about it - particularly about
the missing keyword tags. But the original reason for it was to avoid having
to produce individual customised templates for each of the sites that I run
- which I have been doing for quite some time because users found the
existing 'vanilla' notification emails somewhat confusing especially when
they were using more than one Tiki powered site.

The "what's new" page at
https://doc.tiki.org/Tiki15#Customise_mail_templates_using_a_simple_preferen
ce_setting describes what this is all about but unfortunately I have not yet
added the link 'for more details' since I think this needs to go in a
revamped area of the themes.t.o site but I don't have sufficient permissions
to do the right editing for that site for some reason (despite Gary trying
to sort it out for me).

But the idea is that the pref is absolutely benign if you do not choose to
use it since its default is "". But if you do choose to use then it would
just be a short piece of descriptive text something like "ACME plumbing " -
if the web site was about plumbing - and importantly it should be noted that
there should be a space at the end.

In the Wiki page rename notification example therefore, the subject line
would be:

Subject: ACME plumbing Wiki page renamed

And the body of the email would say:

ACME plumbing Wiki page renamed by xyzuser

Old name: whatever
New name: newwhatever

Etc., etc.

So, yes some thought does have to go into what the pref text should be - but
once set it does give a much better 'message' to the recipient since just
saying a Wiki page has been renamed is not very useful when it could be on
one of several sites

So I think it would actually be useful if we adopted it for the various Tiki
sites i.e. we could use pref text along the following lines:

"Tiki development" for the dev.t.o site
"Tiki documentation" for the doc.t.o ste
etc.

Hope that makes it all a lot clearer

Cheers

geoff

Hi Geoff (cc dev list),

I am not sure how this is supposed to work but it does not make much sense
to me to add the same

\{$prefs.mail_template_custom_text\}

to every tpl, especially the subject ones ? ...

What would be the point to have the same text all over the mails in subject
and in the body too?

E.g. if I filled in "You can go to http://foo.bar for more information"

Thanks,
luci

Mobile security can be enabling, not merely restricting. Employees who
bring their own devices (BYOD) to work are irked by the imposition of MDM
restrictions. Mobile Device Manager Plus allows you to control only the

Hi Gary - yes I have and whilst I can edit an existing page, I only have a
limited set of permissions compared to those that I have on all the other
Tiki sites e.g. I do not have any permissions to 'manipulate' structures I
can only 'view' them and other Tiki functions are similarly limited

Cheers

Mobile security can be enabling, not merely restricting. Employees who
bring their own devices (BYOD) to work are irked by the imposition of MDM
restrictions. Mobile Device Manager Plus allows you to control only the
apps on BYO-devices by containerizing them, leaving personal data untouched!

Hi Geoff,

thanks for the explanation! It makes more sense to me now but I wonder
if just modifying the subject tpls then would not be sufficient for this
simple "prefix" variable.
Why does it have to be repeated in the body of the message too?
Or perhaps wouldn't it be better to have one for the subjects (simple
short field would do) and another one for the body of the message
(textarea could be used for it), and the result would be like this:

Subject: ACME plumbing Wiki page renamed

Body:
Dear customer,

a ACME plumbing website Wiki page renamed

Old name: ...
...

It would be a bit more flexible than just repeating the same prefix
string in the body of the message...
\{$prefs.mail_template_custom_subject_prefix\}
\{$prefs.mail_template_custom_text\}

I know I am a bit late spotting this and I am sorry about it.
Of course just ignore if it is repeated on purpose...

Just my 2c,

luci

Mobile security can be enabling, not merely restricting. Employees who
bring their own devices (BYOD) to work are irked by the imposition of MDM
restrictions. Mobile Device Manager Plus allows you to control only the

Hi Luci - unfortunately to make a subject line 'scan' properly the pref text
cannot always be a simple prefix - sometimes it has to be inserted at
various points in the text.

Also whilst this is obviously a question of individual 'habit' when I look
at mail, whilst I will look at the subject line to decide whether to open
it, I then just focus upon the body/main content to 'absorb' the message -
so that is why I think it is best to repeat the custom element in the body
as well, since this makes the message more complete and understandable
without having to look back at the subject line.

I did actually think about have two separate prefs, and there would
certainly be some advantages in this as you have illustrated - but I was
aware that we have already expanded the number of prefs to a very large
number !! and I thought the benefit of two different ones wasn't really
justified for the simple objective I was trying to achieve - but if you feel
this would be a good idea don't let me stop you from making further changes
:-)

Cheers

Geoff

their own devices (BYOD) to work are irked by the imposition of MDM
restrictions. Mobile Device Manager Plus allows you to control only the apps
on BYO-devices by containerizing them, leaving personal data untouched!
