Tikiwiki Version 18 (dev) stage - Tracker Field Types (Auto-Increment) Not visible from "Settings and features for trackers"

I’m not sure why the field type was renamed. It seems obvious to me that
an auto-incrementing identifier is going to be unique for each record.
On the other hand, it isn’t necessarily obvious that a unique identifier
is auto-incremented from the previous record. (I’m assuming that the
incremented one-integer change between consecutive records may be
significant in itself for some reason.) So maybe keeping or rolling back
the renaming should be discussed.

Auto-Incremented-Unique-Identifier.

The fact of being auto-incremented and consecutive is from my experience
and understanding and expectation the most important identifier of this
field type. Being unique seems to me more or less inevitable and obvious.

+1 to rolling back the name asap

Maybe we should consider to notify devs in general, that it made sense
to desicuss changes like that in the IRC and DEV-list.

My 2 cent.

Good spot, thx, regards,
Torsten

+1 for rolling back if this change is as pointless as it seems to be.

+1 for discussing changes on the dev-list beforehand. It’s a much more

optimal process which would waste less people’s time, which would let them
focus on actual improvements instead of investigating puzzling changes.

Discussing changes on the dev list in order to achieve consensus before
making changes has been our traditional way of operating and I don’t see
any benefit for Tiki’s quality to the recent change in process.

Cheers,
J-M

Hi Torsten,
I renamed this field type a few months ago. The idea being to go back to a name targetting users, rather than developers.

It has never been specified that the values for this field would be consecutive.

It auto-increments within all of Tiki, using the actual tracker item ID, or
it can increment within a tracker, and thus with IDs that are sequential
within a tracker.

We use both methods. In particular, we use the second one with a “prepend”
so we can have TASK100, TASK101. And we have a todo to be able to use these
in URLs (done, waiting for semi-automatic merge to end) and the search
engine (still todo, I think).

“Unique Identifier” conveys to me something closer to our permanent names
(for tracker fields), so something that you can set. I am not aware that
it’s possible to manually set this value.

Overall, Auto-increment is a better name because it conveys what the
feature does and uniqueness of ID is implicit.

I don’t think the typical tracker user will be confused by “Auto-increment”
but I’d be OK with “Auto Incremented Unique Identifier” as well.

Thank you.

They indeed can’t IIRC, but there are several kinds of unique identifiers, and in my opinion the kind you discuss is the least common: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unique_identifier

>Overall, Auto-increment is a better name because it conveys what the feature does and uniqueness of ID is implicit.

“Auto-increment” is just a verb and can be eliminated from the options for that reason alone. It does talk about how the field is implemented, but users want to know what it provides them.

>I don’t think the typical tracker user will be confused by “Auto-increment” but I’d be OK with “Auto Incremented Unique Identifier” as well.

I am not strongly opposed to that option, but there are a few issues:
1. The implication that the content is a number, which is not always the case
2. It does not explain what is incremented nor when incrementation occurs, which could be misleading. A user might believe that an item’s field is incremented when it is modified.
3. “Auto-incrementation” is a very simple thing, but a pretty technical term.

I have no issue with auto-increment, but serial or auto-increment ID are good also.

I think this is a big discussion for a small issue.

If people have that much energy, I can suggest some tasks before we release Tiki18. :-)
