What Happened Since Then?
The first version of Tiki i18n proved itself. It was fully functional, and translations were regularly added to SVN
. At its peak, contributors coordinated community translation efforts through https://i18n.tiki.org
, which helped push the German and French languages forward to about 91% and 89% completion, respectively, while additional contributions outside the platform also helped achieve these results.
However, one of the blockers that emerged was the shift from SVN to Git
. The system had been built specifically for SVN, and when Git became the standard, the workflow no longer matched the tools developers were using. This transition created a gap, and the project naturally paused until a new approach could take shape.
The New Iteration: i18n.tiki.org in 2025
Now, fourteen years later, we’re back with Tiki i18n v2, a fresh take on interactive translation.
This new iteration introduces several key improvements:
- A modern, user-friendly interface: translators can see and edit text in context with less complexity. Untranslated strings are highlighted in red, making it easy to visually spot what still needs translation.
- Stronger foundation: the move from SVN to Git ensures the translation system evolves alongside Tiki’s development workflow, avoiding the kind of gap that paused the first iteration.
- Collaborative contribution process: instead of translations being added directly to the source code, contributions are now added via Merge Requests on GitLab. This allows translations to be reviewed, discussed, and refined before becoming part of Tiki.
See the commits and merge requests here
This new setup builds on the strengths of the first iteration: broad participation, alignment with Tiki’s source code, and now a clearer interface and a collaborative contribution process before translations become part of Tiki.
Why It Matters
- Built for today’s contributors: modern UI, smoother workflows.
- Stronger integration: GitLab ensures translations flow directly into Tiki’s development pipeline.
- Community-first: just as before, it’s about enabling anyone, not just coders, to make Tiki more accessible worldwide.
A New Chapter
The first version proved the concept. This new iteration builds on that legacy, keeping the spirit of accessibility and collaboration alive, but with modern tools and renewed energy.
