History: Tiki Suite Hardware

Have an older laptop lying around? It should be able to run Tiki Suite just fine. You can also purchase a ClearBOX or rent a dedicated server ("root") from any hosting provider.

In the future, we'd like to figure out a way to run on a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plug_computer

Please share below your experience of successes and failure with various hardware. In general, pretty much any laptop will work, if it has USB ports.

Standard Laptop + extra NIC

Pros

• A laptop has a built-in UPS!
• Easy to move around
• Built-in keyboard & screen

Cons

• Laptops are not designed for years of 24/7 operation so they can overheat.
• Only one RJ-45 network interface

If you don't have a CD/DVD drive, you can Install via USB

USB-NIC

You will likely need a second (or even third) network interface. Since laptops typically have only one NIC, you should purchase a USB-NIC. These can be ordered online for a reasonable price but they don't always work with ClearOS. Since it can be a hit & miss, you may want to order a few from different vendors, to increase the odds that you will have at least one that works. Search for "usb rj45 linux" at your favorite store ex.: Ebay.
