Topics

Because Bernard is unavailable for the second, we will start with two topics concerning him more

1.1. The wishlist on dev.tiki.org

Over the last several months, Bernard and many devs have had regular meetings to clean up https://dev.tiki.org/tracker5Question with a last in, first out approachQuestion. How has it been going? How far back did we get to?

1.2. When to backport ?

Related URLs:

The question was raised during a bug review session with the young dev team. Fixes commit fixes are made on master but a lot were reported on working Tiki that are not running on master but on version that can master -1, -2 or more (especially on previous LTS). While some backport requires the eyes of an expert to avoid breaking previous versions some may come as automatic or semi-automatic (on request). A simple Decision Tree easy to work on should be established, something like this (should be discussed);

  • If a commit fixes a regression in previous version(s):
    • If the version is the previous LTS → Automatic backport
    • If the version is a supported LTS → Discuss before backporting
    • If the version is the previous major version (not close to EOL) → Backport
    • If the version is the previous major version (close to EOL) → No Backport
    • If the version is unsupported → No backport
  • If a commit fixes a bug in a previous version:
    • If the version is the previous LTS and if it blocks a key feature → Backport
    • If the version is a supported LTS and if it blocks a key feature → Discuss before backporting
    • If the version is the previous major version (not close to EOL) and if it blocks a key feature → Backport
    • If the version is the previous major version (close to EOL) and if it blocks a key feature → No Backport
    • If the version is the previous LTS and if it’s a small, safe fix → Backport
    • If the version is a supported LTS and if it’s a small, safe fix → Discuss before backporting
    • If the version is the previous major version (not close to EOL) and it’s a small, safe fix → Backport
    • If the version is the previous major version (close to EOL) and f it’s a small, safe fix → No Backport
    • If the version is the previous LTS and if it’s minor or risky → Discuss before backporting
    • If the version is a supported LTS and if it’s minor or risky → Discuss before backporting
    • If the version is the previous major version (not close to EOL) and it’s minor or risky → No Backport
    • If the version is the previous major version (close to EOL) and f it’s minor or risky → No Backport
  • If a commit fixes a usability issue:
    • ...
  • If a commit fixes a Visual issue:
    • ...

Some Warnings

  • The older the branch, the higher the risk of breaking things.
  • Even “small” changes may behave differently in LTS.
  • When in doubt → Bring it up for discussion with release maintainers.

I know there is a page somewhere about how to commit and where, but I remember it outdated (long time I haven't look at it). I wanted to review it but dev.t.o is actually having troubles with page (error 500 on wiki pages).
This would also allow better usage/understanding of git labels: https://gitlab.com/tikiwiki/tiki/-/labelsQuestion

Security fixes → Mandatory backport to all supported versions.
Regression fixes → Always backport (LTS first).
Blocking bugs → Backport to supported versions.
Admin preferences → Only if broken or misleading, not for enhancements.

Risk Levels

  • Very low risk (isolated, clear fix) → Safe to backport.
  • Medium risk (shared code, wider impact) → Needs discussion.
  • High risk (refactor, dependency-heavy) → Avoid backport.

it might also be a bug (regression) introduced in 27, not spotted by many users, went to 28, and then it was "discovered" and fixed by someone in master/29... they might not even know it was introduced in 27 and is still there - who tells them to test all the previous versions and that it should be backported to 28 - 27?

It should not be default by the definition... wiki is not intended to be wysiwyg by default but use wiki syntax or maybe markdown in the future if it becomes the major way to replace wiki syntax
lu

01:20:17
@ushindi I think you should not add topics and assign it to other people expecting they will talk about it without first discussing it with them?
