About feature overlap

There is very little feature overlap in Tiki. There is some but in proportion to the overall project, there is very little and the community actively avoids duplication and will merge features when appropriate (with a data migration script to make sure no one is left behind). This is part of the Tiki model. However, as Tiki Suite is a suite of a dozen or so FLOSS components who are all self-sufficient apps, there will be overlap in Tiki Suite, notably between a desktop-app and a web app. For example, Thunderbird vs Zarafa WebApp vs Tiki webmail.

It will be up to the end user to decide which one to use.

While both BigBlueButton and Jitsi permit video-conferencing, the focus is different. BigBlueButton is focused on e-learning and the participants only need a Flash-enabled browser and to access a URL at a given time. While Jitsi is an app installed on the client, and it typically starts when you boot your computer. So it's more suitable for "presence". As a client application, Jitsi has more control of your desktop and you can do things that are not currently possible with web apps. So for daily team collaboration, Jitsi will be better, but for occasional customer support, you can't ask people to install/configure a desktop application, and thus, BigBlueButton's 1-click access is a winner.

Software Categories according to Wikipedia

Here is a list of Wikipedia entries which describe the feature-set which should be ultimately covered by the Tiki Suite.

Tiki

Current

Eventually

To be covered by other apps than Tiki

Mostly because it doesn't make sense to do in PHP/MySQL or because it's very specific and easy to integrate
