image uploads not working right

I'm having problems with uploading images to image galleries. I've tried it on both a Tiki 1.8.4 and a 1.8.6. Both seem to have problems with the same images (spookily enough). The images are jpg's, and on the small side. Has anyone encountered this before or have I done something wrong? Any clues on what could be going on?

What happens is that if it "likes" the image the page will take a little time, then re-load with the image and its thumbnail, as it should. But if it doesn't "like" the image, it will just sit there. You may wait and re-hit "upload" a thousand times, to no avail. You can continue and try again that image later, but it won't do you any good. In desperation I tried re-saving the jpgs and that helped sometimes, but not always.

I haven't had the time to do really extensive testing but that DOES seem to work! biggrin

Thanks a lot!!

Hi Marianne:
this happened to us (UniWiki, Tiki 1.8.4, with .jpg's), and we concludded that it was an issue specific of the .jpg file. This seems as if it depends on the version of jpg (although all jpg should be the same, isn't it?). It happened the same to me years ago with .tif images, generated from different programs, and not all of the generated the same tiff image, even if they said they did.

Suggestion, convert the image to other formats (gif, png, ...), and upload again. To convert, on MS Windows platfrom, I recommend the small, easy, powerfull and free program called Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com. At the "save as" menu, you can chose image format, ...
Good luck!
(report if this helped!)

Thanks! Though I'm not sure that's quite the problem. One of the things I tried when I really needed to get some pics up was to upload all the ones I could, then resave the problematic ones. This worked fine with perhaps 3/4 of them, but a few "stubborn" ones had to be re-saved several times before they'd go up. I was using the same program (Photoshop) the whole time, so I doubt there's anything particularly wrong with the format (some DID upload, after all).
While re-saving seems fine for special occasions; it's be a pain if it had to be done every time you want to upload new pictures. A lot of people will just say "forget about this".frown

But I'll keep investigating! Thanks, anyway! biggrin

Marianne, I've benn using intensively the inage gals. (view, upload, delete, ...) during two Tiki courses I gave last week (finished them right now), and we have had exactly what you say.

However, the proplem happened even if we uploaded "small" image files (3 images at a time from different computers of ca. 30 Kb each). The Internet browser (MozillaFirefox 0.9.x) got stuck at the upload or at the image gallery viewing, and nothing else could be done with the Internet Browser. However, the server was ok, and the local computer also worked fine, except for the browser.

Later on, from another computer, I tried to clean things up from the image galleries, and My own computer Browser, from other building, IP, operating system (Win2k pro, Firefox 0.9) got stuck also at viewing the image gal.
See it at: http://uniwiki.ourproject.org/tiki-browse_gallery.php?galleryId=10

Increase file upload limit in php.ini? I don't have access to configure this in the shared server I'm using. How much should I suggest the admin of the server to increase this limit to?

make sure your PHP memory_limit is more than 8Mb in the php.ini
