    Did you reboot apache to have the memory limit effective?

    thanks for your answer. Yes, I invoked rcapache2 restart after each new try (which, alas, was quite often...). I also inserted a dummy print statement at the top of the tiki-index.php file. If I call the corresponding URL from the browser then, I get to see the printout, but nothing else. Verrry strange...
