Re: Advice on security

Vivienne,

Just yesterday I spent hours deleting 528 comments -all of which were exactly the Viagra/porn stuff described. I was able to go over a year before they discovered I'd let any yahoo comment (I wanted to encourage participation) but I knew they'd come and they did.

Look at adjusting permissions in the Group admin area. I now have set Anonymous users to pretty much view only. I also agree with Rick (I always agree with Rick!) about the anti bot code. Also look in the Login admin area for "Prevent automatic/robot registration", "...but need admin validation" (you'll need to decide how much headache it will be to approve every registration) and "Request passcode to register"(but then you have to distribute the passcode somehow).

If you do get the nasties actually registering as users, I have found that I can go to the Users admin screen, sort by last login (just click the words) and you can usually spot the jerks.

I'm working through this now too and I'll watch this thread for more ideas, as I am certainly no genius here. Security is a game of odds, not certainty and whatever you do will either raise or lower your chances of problems -you'll not entirely prevent a motivated jerk from trashing your hard work.

The time we waste dealing with useless wastes of human protoplasm who devote their lives to making other people's lives miserable... (sigh).
