External Wiki links - Wikipedia

I've done a lot of searching, and I can't find an answer to my problem with External Wiki links. It's probably something very simple staring me in the face, but ...

I'm using the same syntax for my link to Wikipedia as presented in the ))TikiWikidoc page ((doc:ExternalWiki:

Copy to clipboard
wp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/$page

and yet my wiki's not sending out spaces properly. If I then put

Copy to clipboard
((wp:Declaration of Independence))

in one of my wiki pages, the link directs people to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration+of+Independence, not the correct http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_Independence. What am I missing? How do I get ))TikiWiki(( to properly handle spaces or punctuation the way Wikipedia does?

Note: I'm using release 1.9.7.

You have to use the correct URL. Wikipedia's URLS do not include spaces. So, in your example, the URL shoudl be:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_independence

not

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration of independence

Your wiki link should be:

Copy to clipboard
((wp:Declaration_of_independence))

Yeah, I saw that that worked. Seems a bit backwards, though. If I want the text of my wiki article to read, "Thomas Jefferson completed his first draft of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration of Independence" class="wiki wikinew text-danger tips">Declaration of Independence on..." instead of "Thomas Jefferson completed his first draft of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_Independence" class="wiki wikinew text-danger tips">Declaration_of_Independence, then I have to use
Copy to clipboard
((http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_Independence|Declaration of Independence))

Shouldn't the external wiki function allow the site admin to specify word linking syntax as well? With the plethora of wiki engines, extwiki as written's only really useful if one's linking to external TikiWikis.

Thanks for the help, in any case!

Intesting idea, but I think that in this case, the problem is with Wikimedia (or at least the specific Wikipedia page). If the page was named Declaration of Independence or Declaration%20of%20Independence there wouldn't be a problem.

I belive that any link created with the ((foo)) syntax is taken to be a literal link.
