Site wide image problem - SOLVED!

I have just installed (successfully?) TikiWiki v1.9.8.1, and I am now in the configuration stage. This is my first wiki, so it is plausible that the solution is simple but that I am just missing it.

THE PROBLEM: Except for favicon.png in the wiki root, images do not appear anywhere within the wiki. That includes all modules, sections, and accounts.

SYMPTOMS: In place of images, alternate text is shown. I am able to *right-click* on the alternate text and choose *view image* from the menu. The browser then loads up a page with the image all by itself. When I hit the back button to go back to my wiki page, the image will then load as it was meant to be on the page (see attached image). I could repeat this process for each of the images on the page, however, when the page is refreshed all images are lost and once again only the alternate text is shown.

WIKI SETUP:
Use gzipped output _ _ _ tested both on/off

SERVER STATS:
hosted linux w/apache server
php max_execution_time _ _ _ 30
php max_input_time_ _ _ _ _ _ 60
php memory_limit_ _ _ _ _ _ _ 64M

Functionally, everything else (so far) seems to be working as it should be. I have the wiki loaded into a subdomain, and I have copied the files and ran the installation as the documentation stated. Let me know if there is any additional info that you need.

UPDATE! UPDATE! Site wide image problem SOLVED!

As it turns out, the problem was not with the wiki at all, but with the settings in my main hosted server account. I have "hotlink protection enabled" on my main website. So when I put my wiki inside a subdomain on that account, none of the images would display. I was able to get the images to show up in my wiki by adding the site address of my wiki to the white list I have for my hotlink protection.

Do you have "Use gzipped output" activated on the Admin General page (tiki-admin.php?page=general)? This can cause problems with images.

Other than that, I'm not sure. I have similar installations with no image problems like this.

Thanks for the feedback Gary. I have tested the wiki with "Use gzipped output" both on and off. When switching between the two, I cleared my browser cache and then refreshed the page. Still no images.

When I first installed the wiki (I kept all the default options suggested with the FTP install), even before I had a chance to screw things up by logging in as admin and mucking with the settings, there were no images. So I am not sure how to proceed.
