Category field in Trackers - how do they work??

Hi - I'm developing a Tracker where I need to restrict access to individual records so that some Groups can see all the records and individual contributors/other Groups can only see their own records. In 2.0/2.1 there is now a category field and I thought this would do what I want, ie by setting this field to a designated category or set of categories it would restrict its access.

But it doesn't seem to be doing what I thought. All the various set up works fine I can set the field to any combination of existing categories within an individual parent by using the various options. But when I login with a variety of userids they can all see all the records irrespective of the value set in the Category field. Also by setting these category field values new categories are created under a new parent Category with the same name as the Tracker. So this functionality is doing something quite clever but clearly too clever for me because I just can't work out what its for?

Can anyone suggest what this field actually does and can be used for, AND more importantly any suggestions on how to solve my main problem of letting individual Tracker records be restricted?

thanks

Without having worked out the intricacies in my head yet, and just wanting to throw some ideas out there...

To look at this from a different perspective, rather than trying to categorize records, why not have the records themselves dictate who gets to see what?

Do the options under Field is hidden?, not help you with this?
OR
The fields user/group selector?
OR
Some combination thereof.

I'm fairly convinced what you're looking for can be done, I just haven't figured out how yet, mainly because I've never had to do it myself and have only used trackers sparingly. Maybe someone with greater expertise in this area can point you in the right direction.

Well - I've now tried quite a few combinations using all the various Field is hidden options as well as having "user selector" and even "group selector" fields with their field feeder set to 1 - all to no avail. Actually I can't even get the most basic example that is set out in the existing Tracker documentation to work.

I would really appreciate some pointers here from anyone that has used these features in anger.

thanks
