I use the groups to allow access, per se, to pages AND forums. I am not aware of a way to gain access via a password except in the forum wherein it only serves as a way to allow for someone to post.
I may be wrong as I am not a coder/DEV, but I believe that what you are talking about is called permissions. That's how I have created multi-user access in my wiki (Project Magellan). Thus, only admins (or those possessing the ability thru perms) can safely assign groups.
