Search is very bizarre - please answer

I find the search very peculiar in tikiwiki.org.

  • when I search for a word the result returns items that do not include the word
  • some returned items appear more than once in the list (redundant and confusing)
  • when I put "+" before a word to say it must appear, this causes the search to crash with a long list of errors.

Which search feature is installed on tikiwiki.org?

Are there any better search modules that could be plugged in?

Is there any news of the integration with Mindmeld?

Thanks for the help - Joel G

Mindmeld seemed rather dead recently, a licensing issue was mentionned, check the page about that for more details ai guess.
I think + is known to be problematic, the double results too, for the first item I already saw this too, mention what if you want so we can confirm.
Overall search is still pretty experimental, particularly after being started from scratch for DB abstraction in 1.8.

I had the same frustration with Search so often that I just gave up and relied on Google to come up with anything important.

As search is a rather critical part of any good community site, shouldn't this problem get a bit more mindshare at this late date? I mean, is the goal to be the best portal out there, or the best aspiring portal out there?

Hi matt,
search is a "global" feature which needs some skill to develop. It is indeed an important issue, but probably not critical. Anyway, the point is in OSS asking doesn't help. You can do it yourself, hopefully. THis is not a reproach in case you don't want to do it, but more importantly a warning not to expect too much.

Someone just sent me a message about a fix for search he proposed though. The code is open, maybe it will be done bit by bit.

wink

Chealers correct

If you want something in the Tiki project, youll have to either do it yourself or hire a Tiki Expert/Developer

We dont have any work teams for features etc. We all use Tiki and fix what we use and want

Guess that sums up the famous open source attitude pretty well. One would think making a viable product would be the main goal. Otherwise, what's the point of so much work? So you can say "Look Ma, I have a website and it runs a CMS that I work on"?

Tiki is massive, we all use different features of it. If you use search you fix it, if you dont, you cant.

The search is in need of a rewrite as there are many security concerns with it revealing your content to anonymous. Time is precious at the moment for me and during May by Tiki Community work has been small. If I was paid to work Tiki 100% then I guess there would be no bugs!

So stop complaining, get yourself into Tikis code, and help fix biggrin

It works for us. It is a volunteer project. We get what we need out of it and contribute where we can to make it better. Find something better for free? Then use it! It's all about choice. razz
