Future of Tiki

Maybe the wrong place to post this but I would like to implement TikiWiki at the ofiice because of its superb features.

Problem: How can I convince management that TikiWiki will be around 5 years from now ? How do I jnow the developers won't move on to something else and Tiki will die like a few other Wiki's that have already done so.

How do I know that the project won't die from feature overflow and the maintencance will become too high and heavy ?

I see it doesn't support Apache 2.0 and the latest Perl 5.8. Is this because there's too many changes to be done ?

The deployment would be Canda wide. I don't want to leave my users sitting high and dry 2 years down the road.

From my initial tests this is great software and hope it has a long live.
Congrats !

Keep the good stuff coming 😊

Hi BM!

The future is bright.

Problem: How can I convince management that TikiWiki will be around 5 years from now ? How do I jnow the developers won't move on to something else and Tiki will die like a few other Wiki's that have already done so.

Since the code is open source, nothing stops you from maintaining it even if the community somehow vanished. The best way to make sure Tiki will be alive & kicking in 5 years is to participate.

Tiki has a much larger development team than most projects. Tiki has (in a very short period) reached a certain maturity and now has a fairly large userbase. Tiki has, in my humble opinion, as much chance as any open source CMS to be there in 5 years.

Tiki is much more than just a wiki. As a full fledged CMS, some people may mostly use the wiki, but others will use other features. This versality increases the chances that the project will survive.

Now, what about things Tiki relies on?

PHP has a very high probability of being around in 5 years. No need to elaborate further here.

Tiki uses a database abstraction layer so we are "future-proof" in this respect. If one database is "gone" or no longer open source in 2 years, just use another.

What if Tiki dies?
I don't think Tiki will "die". However, a project better meeting your needs may come around. All your data is kept cleanly in the database. So if ever you did want to change projects, it remains an option to write a migration script.

I see it doesn't support Apache 2.0 and the latest Perl 5.8. Is this because there's too many changes to be done ?

Tiki uses PHP (not Perl) and AFAIK, works with any version after 4.1.2 including PHP 5. Apache 2 is supported. The only issue AFAIK, is there may be some modifications to .htaccess files.

How do I know that the project won't die from feature overflow and the maintencance will become too high and heavy ?

Now that's the interesting question! Please see: UserPagemarclaporte at the section "Tiki bloating & featuritis". This is a frequent comment & concern. I personally am not worried.

Tell "management": Nobody ever got fired for picking Tiki 😉

Best regards,

M 😉

Hi There!

I alone would keep Tiki alive if everyone else moved on to pastures new. Tiki is just totally amazing and I can only see it get better and better and faster and faster!

I use Tiki on my Apache 2 based webservers without any problems!
and we are PHP not perl so I dont see the problem there 😀

At the end of the day its open source, you take it and mould it into something you want. If you want it that bad its up to you to be able to support it and maintain it away from us if needed. Espeically is the worse happened and you got hacked 😑 Be aware we have fixed some vunerabilities in 1.8.2 but IMHO we have more to find and fix.

There is plenty of help here for free and irc.freenode.net/#tikiwiki is around for free help, but if you want some quality "paid" support to get the best answers fast take a look on FindTikiExpert page.

Hi;
well I think I agree with Damian. If you like this product then go for it!
I no nothing about coding or whatever, BUT I know that right now I can take this product and make it work. How to sell it with the boss?? no answers.

BUT i know that even if there is no work done on this project it is still way beyond anthing out there! So what to do? Hold on it is getting better!
