Crazy-Go-Nuts-Idea

Hi Folks!

I spent so long correcting my poor spelling that I got logged out before I could post my: Crazy Go Nuts Suggestion.

It's another one of my long and monotonous posts so take some coffe and regular paragraph breaks. I'd be interested to see what you have to say on the subject either on my site - where it is - or, easier for most, here.

''Incidentally - I never say this, but - Tiki is awesome!! I think it's great: I sat down and listed everything I wanted on my website and Tiki does it all!
Absolutely Cool.''

Interesting idea

Although I think the post asking for wikiplugins for links is a little more my cup of tea solution.

Problem I see with getLink is speed. Maybe a immediation solution is a lookup chart 😊

Anyway, lets see what others say.

Maybe I am missing something, but isn't that just a custom menu? On a site I am doing for a customer, I just have a custom menu where the links are renamed, such as 'News' that goes to a blog, and other text that links to specific wiki pages, and stuff like that.

Sortof yes and sortof no.

The issue is; I want my site users to be able t edit thing like the wiki and post in forums etc etc.

But I want to call the Wiki "The programming Section" but what I'm getting tired of doing is going through all the templates editing all references to Wiki to read "Programming section", Also I want my CMS or Articles section to be known throughout the entire site as "news".

I do use a custom menu to do this, as you can see on my site but there are still indecrepencies, like the title on all of the FAQ units says "FAQ's" when I want it to read "Help", all the help for editing the "Programming Section" still refers to it as Wiki.

  • a little late*

This is exactly the sort of function that non-programming admins like me would like too. In order to add the sort of ease of customusation, there are some key features like this that people like me look for. This would certainly save my team a hell of a lot of tpl prodding, which may become a problem with updates and so on.

  • quietly bugs for custom user profile fields too*

tikiwiki needs to find a way of providing some of the major functions that programming n00bs like me tend to find in crappy apps like post-nuke et al, or it will stay exclusively in the programming community. Or is that not a bad thing? 😉

I think i suggested (probably in IRC) using the actual translation system for this. Translation files are editable (ok, maybe not thru the tiki interface) and you can translate tiki into english, so you can translate i.e. "Articles" as "News".

But this idea could go a bit forward, without requiring changing all templates. In templates, exist already a way to changing the bundled strings for others, and that is used by the translation system, as i said before. But if that is not enough, maybe another "layer" of translation could be used, something very like hotwords in administration, where on load of the current language.php (or in the translate function/tr modifier) you do a seach/replace of strings to your own way to see them. This could slow down Tiki a bit, adds another administrative option and another table, but enables you to do that changes db based (i.e. still works even after upgrading tiki) and not requires changing most templates.
