Polaris or Eta Carinae

All ..
I am planning to implement TW as part of our corporate Intranet. Everybody will be registered, no anonymous anything will be allowed. However, we do have a mixed OS environment. Mostly Windows & Mac. Browsers are M$IE (various flavors), Netscape and Safari. Some (very few right now) Linux with Mozilla.
Here are two questions for the community:
Q1: Today, which version would you deploy? 1.8.x or 1.7.7. Note that our users are not sophisticated, and our support staff is very limited. So I need reliability and robustness over flashiness. However, I do not want to create future upgrade problems either.
Q2: Given the plethora of browsers used in the company, which style has the best cross-browser compatability?.
TIA,
Dr Magu

  1. I'd use 1.8.2, considering 1.7.7 is the last version of Eta Carinae anyway and both have similar stability.
  2. moreneat is the most used theme. I'd expect it to be the best. It might not be stupid however, if you experience problems (particularly, Safari...), to add a bit of code in tiki-setup.php to determine the theme depending on the browser.

Sorry but 1.7 Tiki will be around a lot longer than you think. 1.7.8 will include the fixes for wiki rollback.

For a new Tiki I would use 1.8.2, but if you really need super super stable, I'd go for 1.7.7

Thank you guys!
Since I originally started out with 1.8.2, I may just stick with that, or go to the 1.8.3 version which seems to be running here. Any ideas? There are some annoying little bugs, e.g. the alternate thumbnail upload which is broken, but hey .. I can live with those I guess 😉.
Now, with regard to the browser issue, that is potentially much more of a problem 😑. The creative part of the company uses Macs. These are potentially some of the more prolific contributors. They typically are also amongst the most non-techie types. Safari seems to be a good browser for most things, however, it breaks a lot of the styles 😢. Just curious if anyone has done, to your collective knowldege, a browser x style compatability matrix.
BTW: I noticed that breakage can be section dependent. So, you'd need a browser x style x section matrix 😎.
Cheers,
Dr Magu
