Topics
First hour, quick news
- Tiki 30.x has branched (updated from the Release Team?)
- REF Tiki Article: Remove expiration date feature
(wasn't refactoring, it removed a useful feature and wasn't posted on Endangered features
)
- schema.org support on its way to Tiki, discussion here
- ...
Put your topic (max. 5-10 minutes) into the list above
Second hour, longer topics
- gitignore discussions, should
_custombe ignored? I think it should be but others think not
- Dozens and dozens of MRs labelled to backport but they don't get done for months and months. Ex.: https://gitlab.com/tikiwiki/tiki/-/merge_requests/?sort=created_asc&state=merged¬%5Blabel_name%5D%5B%5D=Backported&label_name%5B%5D=CherryPickDownTo%3A%3A27.xLTS&first_page_size=20
- Should we continue as is, maybe we should tag fewer and make sure to get them done, or something else?
- Good question @marclporte, and some of them are mine, we definitely have more code coming in that we can safely handle at the moment - discuss 😋
- P.s. we used to be able to have unnumbered items as children of a numbered list, but no more - was that intentional? (and the numbering is all wrong, and the "cancel edit" button doesn't work any more!)
- Rants from some old guy(s)
- Further to my point last month on how many developers actually use Tiki? I'd like to expand on that a little with a couple of analogies:
• Imagine Tiki is a nice big old house, but there's a small crack in an attic window (bear with me 😉) - the solution applied was like replacing all the ground floor windows and doors with plastic bags, which sort of worked if you didn't look too closely.
• Another [FIX] description was so enigmatic and hard to understand it didn't make sense, but the fix was to remove 90% of the light switches!
Both of these regressions would have been spotted by someone using Tiki master on a regular basis, but were left for weeks before (grumpy old guy) took action and reverted them.
On a more positive note: my suggestion is, that if your fix is for a small thing, your code change should be small, preferably removing bad code, before adding more. I know most of the code being pushed looks great, is perfectly formatted and spelt, and passes the CI and unit tests, but so often leaves major features unusable (i.e. try uploading an image and adding it to a wiki page, or switching from wysiwyg to plain edit mode) - less is more! - Next..?

Follow-Up
- What should we do with merge requests tagged as backports but never actually backported? We should reduce unnecessary backports because sometimes they cause too many problems.
- We need to create a policy around merge requests in Tiki. If a merged MR prevents people from working, it should be reverted

Post-LTS is a good time for major removals

00:09:17
Post-LTS would be even Tiki 31.0
lu
luci
00:09:36
And we would live to support it several years in 30x still (because LTS)
lu
luci
00:09:55
Support the legacy admin I mean
lu
luci
00:10:33
So I would prefer 30.1

00:15:17
That's a basic feature expected from articles, I think.
lu
luci
00:16:14
Imagine you have article for an event invitation - it makes sense to expire if the event is over?
lu
luci
00:16:39
How you make the permission apply by date?
je
Jean-Marc Libs (Jyhem)
00:16:57
It won't be automatically expired
lu
luci
00:17:37
Ah, PluginListExecute could perhaps do it (assign category by expired date) but it is power user setup
je
Jean-Marc Libs (Jyhem)
00:18:02
But where would the article's expiration date be stored?

Not related: Just a note... There are still couple of major usability bugs to be fixed in 30.x - I hope we catch them all before release

It is another bug (regression) with numbered lists

Why not just labelling things as 'fixes' vs 'backports' 🤔

?

And no backporting please
lu

01:23:43
Maybe later when master is thoroughly tested after the refactoring
lu
luci
01:33:07
The problem is "within hours" the author never knows when his MR is merged and if it needs to be reverted he/she might not be available at the time they are requested to fix it. So maybe within 12-24 hours sounds more reasonable?
