Hey warsoul;

There is an easy way to do this.

Create a Category for the area you wish to control.

In Categories admin set perms for that Category

Add the pages and other areas you want to the category. In the admin section you can add your pages with out having to surf around to find them. You may add stuff from a list!

VERY IMPORTANT, you must make sure you add any new items created to the cat or you will not get the protection. I find I have to remind myself to make sure wiki pages and the like are added. If you forget you create a loop hole!

This is nice as you can put most of the TW features into Categories. So you can control perm on the forums or blogs or Galleries etc.

Note also that you can then use theme control to have the category in any theme you wish as well. Pretty neat...

Hope that helps, James

I tried that... I gave " tiki_p_admin_categories" to the group for that category... only Admin_cat and View_Cat are available on the dropdown though... which i though was odd..

No go..

I've heard other people talking about using Categories to set viewing permissions for categorized objects, but I'm not sure if it can be done yet. I tried a test back about the time 1.9.0 was released and that method didn't work in all cases, but it did in some. Don't know if things have progressed since then.

As far as wiki pages are concerned, if you use structures, you can set perms for a whole structure at once.

Beyond that, the safest way is probably to set perms explicitly for each object.

You were in the right place. There is a drop box to the right of the perms box labled groups. If you assign tiki_p_view_categories to your site admin group then only they will be able to see any objects in that cat. Now you assign tiki_p_view_categories to the group that you want to give axcess to.

You must be careful to insure that the child cats are also set up correctly.

If you use the tiki_p_admin_categories future then you can control who can edit items in that cat. So where a person might normally be able to edit a wiki page they could be disallowed in some cats.

The system is working better now. Quite a bit of work was done to prevent inadvertent access to controled areas. You must make sure you are current with your TW install. I do have one site where you can see the pages in the calendar even though you can not see the page. That site needs an upgrade.

I would reccomend doing some tests if you use this. Check to insure your pages do not show up in the list pages, or calendar or other places.

I tried that... give view and admin to the usergroup for a category... still doesnt work unless i set individual page permissions

Try removing the individual permissions on the page, I believe these take complete precedence over the category-based permissions. You are trying to get away from assigning permissions to every object anyway.

So:

  1. The page should no individual permissions
  2. The user's group should have tiki_p_view, plus other permissions appropriate for the group.
  3. Set the permissions for the category, giving the user's group tiki_p_view_categories
  4. Put the page in the category

One other gotcha: Only add the page to one category. If you add it to two categories, your users will need tiki_p_view_categories to BOTH categories. I think this is odd, hint, hint.

I am using a categories to create workgroups and control user's access to the group members; it is working well - except the previous note above.

Where under structures can you set permsissions?

With versions up to 1.9.0 or something, this was on the page that you see when you click the "Perms" link of a wiki page. It isn't there now (1.9.3.1 anyway), so it looks like the procedure has changed and jamesoftopiya's advice is the way to go.
