Thanks Darkbee and Xavi,

For some reason, the problem disappeared after I enabled PHP error reporting (all but strict) in Tiki 50. Doesn't make sense to me, but there you have it. I plan to upgrade to the latest version of Tiki soon and will see how that goes vis a vis file galleries.
