Looking for Arcturus-Geo

Hi,

my Tiki is really old, dating backing back to 1.something. I used the lovely theme "Geo", and when that vanished, I used "Arcturus" with setting "Geo", which was strikingly the same.

At the moment, that is what I still use on Tiki 12.14. But infortunately my ISP is forcing users to go to PHP 7.2, and 12.14 won' t run with that.

When I go a current LTS, that would be 18.3. I did make a small experimental installation with 18.3, but I cannot find anything like Geo in there. Either it is hidden so deeply that I simply can't find it (just as it has been when Geo became part of Arcturus), or it's not there. Having to build it from scratch surely would be a complex task.

So my question is twofold:

Is Geo in 18.3, just hiding?

Or is there a way to re-use the old CSS from 12.14?

Thanks
Oliver

Hi,

The Geo theme hasn't been updated for recent versions of Tiki, which uses the Bootstrap CSS framework now. I can probably do an update of Geo fairly quickly, though, so I'll post again here with more information soon.

Hi Gary,

that is fantastic news! Thank you very very much. This is a link to my current 12.14, so you can see it in action:
http://www.toemlia.de

I did some minor modifications to the CSS (I can send them, if you want), but mostly just little spacing corrections to make it even prettier, and added some typefaces, but only for special use, not for the basic site construction.

Again, thank you.
Yours
Oliver

Hi,

so this is my slightly adapted Geo inside Arcturus. You don't have your mail adress online, so I have to post it here. But it's small and doesn't contain personal information... Over the years I already had to adapt it here in there

Thanks
Oliver

This is the second attempt to include a Zip attachment. Mysteriously it was left out before...
There is something broken here. First the attachment was omitted. Then a complete reply from me with the attachment was ommited altogether, then on the second reply again the attachment was omitted, but the first reply re-appeared out of thin air, but still missing the attachment. So I guess this is a bug in Tiki 19.2 ?? I am unable to post an attachment with a small 90 KByte Zip file containing mostly CSS and some PNG.... btw, this is the latest Firefox browser running on Linux...

Posts from me to this thread mysteriously disappear when I write new ones. This is either some weird caching problem with Firefox or a serious bug in Tiki...

I seem to be able to see all of your posts - one posted 16 hours ago, one 15 hours ago, and three nine hours ago (as of this time), but no zip attachments. I'll check on that.

I did save the CSS file from your website already, so have that on hand now.

I am unsure whether or not I uploaded the CSS version I adapted for 12.02 when I upgraded to 12.14.. Check for a comment in the header that says "Adapted to TikiWiki 12.2 LTS.". Thanks

Hi,

I tried to attach a Geo.zip but, like your attempt, attaching the file failed - I'll submit a bug report. So I uploaded the file to themes.tiki.org's file gallery. You can get it here. The zip contains the Geo theme's directory and subdirectory, so you can expand it and place in your Tiki 18 site's "themes" directory.

The theme name is uppercase so will be out of order in the site's theme selection options.

I didn't add your site's custom font information (font import statements and font properties for headings, etc.) because I wanted to keep the updated theme generic at least for my first attempt. You could edit the Geo.css file, or put that information in the custom css textarea on tiki-admin.php?page=look. Or if there is any problem I can add it in and upload it as a custom Geo theme.

I think the appearance is pretty true to the older version, although of course with the Bootstrap framework incorporated, font sizes are larger and so on (for better appearance on today's higher-resolution screens). Also of course this theme is nicely responsive on small displays like phones and tablets.

Let me know if I missed something or if you see places for improvement.

Thank you so much for your work and your swift help!

I will try it out as soon as I am back home. I only use Cloister Black and KG God Gave Me You for effects, not for regular body text, of course. For body text I have switched to the Garamond typeface, which has the appeal of oldstyle books, with a fallback to Times if Garamond is not available. I haven't loaded Garamond from file (like Cloister Black or KG God Gave Me You). I found this appealing on the Geo theme with oldstyle looking maps as a background :-) As you will have seen, my Tiki is non-public, and it is all about some folks playing the AD&D game for, well, decades...

There is a question I would want to ask at this point. I wanted the above mentioned typefaces for effects to be usable by my users (who are not really into layouts and stylesheets), so I abused some very rarely used markups, for headline level 4 and for strikeout.

That was an easy way out to allow my users the use of these typefaces. Is there another, more "canonical" approach to introduce predefined user fonts for all users?

Thanks
Oliver
