Tables with merged cells?

Is it possible to create tables that have column headings over multiple subheadings? In Excel, you accomplish this using "merge cells". However, it looks from the documentation that merged cells are only possible at the end of rows? (http://doc.tiki.org/Wiki-Syntax-Tables#Spanning_Across_Columns)

This is the effect that I want:

| Category1 | Category2 |
| Sub1a | Sub1b | Sub2a | Sub2b |
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |

Can it be done?

As far as I know, it isn't possible to merge cells using the wiki syntax for tables. What I've done in the past is use an online table generator when I needed to have merged cells (cells with the colspan or rowspan parameter), then use the HTML wiki plugin to put the generated code in the wiki page.

Thanks for that tip. HTML certainly looks nicer but isn't user friendly for editing. Slightly unrelated but I'm trying to make a Tiki table but the scaling is coming off the page since it's so big.
