    I am new to this and I am wondering if it is possible to create Flash animations and add them into some module within the home page of a given site.

    AFAIK is just creating an user module. You there put html, so putting the tags to include a flash animation, stored in the location you want, should work (of course, i'm not sure if this will break page presentation if the animation is too big or thins like that)
