I can't solve the problem, but I can explain
When you click on the field name, the lines are displayed in the order of the field values (one click for asc, another one for descendant)
What is wrong is that "sort_mode= desc", the space before desc shouldn't be there. You should have something like f_12_asc, where 12 is the id of the field. At least it is was I have on a 1.9 CVS.
