Confused about Polls

Dear community:

I've been a tikiwiki user now for about three years, and was a diehard phpbb user before that. One of the things I've missed most about phpbb was the ease with which I could create polls to go along with forum topics. These polls were a great way to generate interest in topics and a cheap way to collect stats. I know that tikiwiki has a poll feature built in, but I've always been confused and unable to use them. I've done searches on this site and looked at the docs on the doc site, but still am confused.

Could someone please post some easy, step-by-step instructionsor perhaps a link to where they could be foundthat explain how I can create polls and use them in my forum posts? I'm not really interested in a fixed poll module on the side menu. I want to be able to post a new poll when I make a new forum topic.

It'd also be nice if somehow the forum thread listing would indicate which threads had polls attached to them.

Thanks in advance for help. I really, really appreciate it.

Did you see PollDoc? Of course you need to activate the Poll feature first, on the Admin/Features pagae. Setting up polls is done on tiki-admin_polls.php.

There doesn't seem to be any way to include a poll directly in a forum thread.

Putting a poll in a side-column module and then discussing it in a forum would work, but I guess is more indirect than you want. I've seen this method used at web sites (RunCMS, maybe) and it seems to work OK, but I agree having the poll form at the top of the forum thread is a more-direct presentation.

Since all the pieces are here and just need to be glued together, maybe a future enhancement of Tiki's forums would be a checkbox and poll Id entry box under the forum's "new topic" line, which would essentially use the poll wikiplugin (or the poll code itself) to display the poll at the top of the thread before the posts start. This is pretty much how XOOPS works. But that's a future enhancement. For now, I think there's no way to bring a poll directly into a forum thread.

Thanks, Chibaguy. I guess it's not the end of the world that I can't use polls in forum posts, though it is disappointing. Your idea for a future enhancement sounds great to me. The poll feature obviously needs an overhaul if it's going to be useful to endusers like me. biggrin
