As it turns out, it is very easy to restore the tiki in a working condition, *without upgrading*. I'll leave that for later, now I only need to get the functionality back and I think I've done that.
Simply restore the database with mysql tiki < tiki_dump.sql and then copy over the old /var/www/tiki directory to the new installation. Works fine after some initial testing.
