wrong choice ?

Hi!
I have downloaded the tiki last hours and I try to transfer this glossary:

http://www.eba-stats.com/form/directory/global_Indexe.htmQuestion

to wiki, and I began to do it chosing "articles" from the features at this test page:

http://www.eba-stats.com/ebawiki/tiki-index.phpQuestion

I have the percepction that I did a wrong choice and that there is a better feature in tikiwiki:

in order to have a list of letters and terms included in each letter....

sombedy can help me:
is there any better choice to do a glossary/ enciclopedy ?

Thanks a lot in advance !
Roberto

You are right: the docs on structures are NOT clear enough. After struggling and succeed on over Joomla, Moodle, SMF and b2evolution in my site, this program is going to defeat me...

According to your proposal how I create a glossary "eBAwords", with the letter/s "Aba ~ Azy" and so on, and into the letter "Aba - Azy" the term "Alternating-possession rule" and so on...
And how it appears in the left menu, how the guest reach to this items...
Before, I had the "Articles" menu, now I don't know HOW the visitor reaches the terms....

Thanks a lot in advance for you help

> You are right: the docs on structures are NOT clear enough. After struggling and succeed on over Joomla, Moodle, SMF and b2evolution in my site, this program is going to defeat me...

Don't give up. 😉 Tiki has many more features and configuration options than those programs (combined), so naturally it takes some time to become familiar with them.

> According to your proposal how I create a glossary "eBAwords", with the letter/s "Aba ~ Azy" and so on, and into the letter "Aba - Azy" the term "Alternating-possession rule" and so on...

First decide on the page hierarchy that you want. I suppose following the original, you would have something like this (children are indented from the parent level):

global_Indexe
 global_A
  global_Aba
  global_Ala
  global_Asa
 global_B
  global_Bab

and so on. If you want to exactly duplicate your original structure, you will need to use the ANCHOR or NAME wikiplugins (I forgot exactly what these are called — you can check in the Show Plugins Help on the wiki edit page) in order to have anchors within pages to link to, for the actual glossary words themselves.

If you make a hierarchy of the desired pages, just as I have shown, with the indenting, you can go to the Admin Structures page (tiki-admin_structures.php)and create a new structure called, perhaps, Glossary. Then paste your hierarchy (as above) into the "tree" box. This will create all of the wiki pages needed.

Then you can click on the name of the structure to edit it. I suggest clicking on each page name to give it an alias if you want to keep the "global_" portion of the names. The page aliases can be simply "A", "Aba" and so on, for a better on-page display. (Alternatively, I suggest not using the "global_" portion of the name. In a wiki, the page name generally is displayed on the page, so it's good to not have something that detracts from understanding.

From the "Modify Structure:Glossary" (or whatever its name) page (tiki-edit_structure.php), you can click on each page's "edit" or "view" link to quickly navigate to it. (Shift-click is good, to open it in a new window.)

To get the alphabet links at the top of the Glossary index page, you'll have to edit the page much like your original, except you can use wiki syntax, something like

A B C etc.

> And how it appears in the left menu, how the guest reach to this items...
> Before, I had the "Articles" menu, now I don't know HOW the visitor reaches the terms....

To get to the glossary's top page, you can specify it as the home page, on the Admin: General page. Or you can make a link to it in a custom menu that you would add to the left column.

I think it would be better to use wiki pages for the glossary. This will be more like your original pages and will provide better navigation, etc.

If you make a "wiki structure"Question, the pages will also get navigation links automatically at the top of each page. The General Index can be the top page of the structure, and the alphabetic pages can be the children. I'm not sure if the docs on structures are clear enough; if not, please post here again.

You can use the multilingualQuestion feature for navigation between the two language versions. After creating an "A" page for each language (with distinct names, such as "A" and "A,en") the editor can click the "translations" icon and indicate that one page is the alternative-language version of the other. Then a drop-down language switch is provided on the page, or you can specify to display the appropriate page in accordance with the visitor's browser language choice.

If I were you, I wouldn't use HTML in the wiki pages. I think the pages can be simpler if wiki text is used. Ideally, you could have a custom theme that would provide the background images and so on. Then each wiki page would only need to be concerned with the actual glossary information. Check out themes.tikiwiki.orgQuestion about making a new Tiki theme.

I saw your message at Zukakakina.com about the Google Adsense module. Did you upload mod-adsense2.php to the modules/ directory, and upload mod-adsense2.tpl to the templates/modules/ directory? Then, to put the module in the wiki page, did you use the MODULE plugin? The syntax entered in the wiki page should be something like this:

Copy to clipboard
{MODULE(module=>adsense2)}{MODULE}

Thanks a lot for yout help, it's very clear ! I'll begin to try your proposal...

With reference to themes I think I changed it a\a afew minutes ago... before your answer.

With reference to the Google Adsense Module, I did it everything the contrary, with your help I arranged it but now appears the half of the ad:

http://www.eba-stats.com/ebawiki/tiki-index.phpQuestion

i don't know how to write the code i included in the module...is 300x250 into a table of 100% width and appears the half of the width ....
and in the forum appears as 125x125, i don't understand... !

Module boxes in the Tikipedia theme are specified by the CSS file to be 170px wide. This is because normally they are used in the rather narrow left column. To make an exception for such boxes in the wikitext, the CSS file has to be edited. You can add something like

.box-adsense2 {
width: 300px;
height: 250px;
}

to the tikipedia.css file to over-ride the default div.box dimensions and define the size of the Adsense module box specifically.

-- Gary

Thanks for your work,
.box-adsense2 {
width: 300px;
height: 250px;
}
but it doesn't works....
as seen here, in the test page:
http://www.eba-stats.com/ebawiki/Question

I inserted your code here:

/******************** Boxes *********************/
/* Boxes used for modules: They are divided into title and data.*/
div.box {
border: none;
margin: 0 0 .5em;
padding: 0;
float: none;
width: 11.6em;
overflow: hidden;
width: 170px;
}

.box-adsense2 {
width: 300px;
height: 250px;
}

Try changing it like this:

.wikitext .box,
.box-adsense2 {
width: 300px;
height: 250px;
}

-- Gary

YOU Succeeded! Thank you !

Now: to use this module for the left or right column (160x600 or 125 x125 adsense) I need to create a new module, let's say adsense3 with the new code ?

> YOU Succeeded! Thank you !

Well, we succeeded. 😉

> Now: to use this module for the left or right column (160x600 or 125 x125 adsense) I need to create a new module, let's say adsense3 with the new code ?

That's right, since the dimensions will be different.

As you said created the menu "encyclopedia" but I don't find how to link to the strtuctyure ebawords with the created pages A,B,c etc....

> As you said created the menu "encyclopedia" but I don't find how to link to the strtuctyure ebawords with the created pages A,B,c etc....

The structure is already linked to its member (child) pages, as you can see by navigating with the "home," "previous," "up, and "next" icons, etc. on each page of the structure.

How you get to the structure and its pages is a different question. You can use a custom menu or put links in modules or other wiki pages, etc. Also maybe the top page of the structure can have the alphabetic links.

For the Español version, I'm not exactly sure, but I think it would be good to make a duplicate of the English structure and then use the "Translation" link to create a one-to-one correspondence between pages with the same but translated content.

Because of my advanced age, I am not ready to do an MBA in Physical-Mathematical-Spacial-Statistical Sciences to understand TikiWiki...
I am sorry.... All what Moodle, SMF Forums, Joomla and b2evolution are friendly to idiot users as me, only a physical education professor, TikiWiki is not.....

All the tutorials of TikiWiki are written in "chinese" or "zulu", "use {menu id=x}" or "three following syntaxes: {phplayers id=47}, {phplayers id=47 type=horiz}, {phplayers id=47 type=vert}", or at least in a very professional hi-tech language.... without hurting anyone.. but I only know spanish, english and portuguese... and some html....

Ten days ago I created, according to your proposal, the structure "ebawords" with the sub-pages A to Z, and inclusive 2 or 3 terms from the letter A....
From four days ago I am strugling with the created menu " Encylopedia " trying to connect it to "ebawords'...... no actions is successful.... something to say the visitor "here is the glossary....." nothing succeeds...

I reached TikiWiki because a Google Search which assured me that TikiWiki is the simpliest to use but.... I am very sorry, I am not at Argentine now and I'll not return to my Buenos Aires University to do this...

If somebody can help me in simply english this are my links.... if not, I assure you that I tried hard and it is my fault.... not yours and this is my last time boring you:

I understand that you are trying to make a new menu, to point to the eBAwords glossary. To make the menu, go to the Admin Menu page (tiki-admin_menus.php), and fill in the boxes under "Create new Menu". Give the menu a name (like "new_menu") and description; "dynamic collapsed" is probably the best type. Then save. When the page refreshes, you will find the menu listed. Click on the "tools" icon to add the links. The link to the top of the eBAwords structure will be something like

Name: eBAwords
URL: tiki-index.php?page=eBAwords
Sections: wiki
Permissions:
Group:
Type: Section

Nothing needs to be input for Permissions or Group since there are no restrictions on viewing these pages.

There is potential for confusion because "Section" in the above is used in two different ways. The first instance means the "feature" of Tiki that the menu item is pointing to, such as "wiki," "forum," "blog," etc. The second instance, under "Type," means the "folder" type of menu item, as opposed to "option" which are the items within a menu section. In the standard Tiki menu, for example, "MyTiki" is a section item, and "MyTiki home" and the others are object items.

More items can be added to the menu, as desired.

When the menu is ready, it can be displayed in a module (the boxes in the side columns) or directly in a template. The second choice is generally for horizontal PHP Layers menus, and require editing of a template file such as tiki.tpl or tiki-top_bar.tpl.

To put a menu in a module (side-column box), go to the "Admin Modules" page (tiki-admin_modules.php) and go to the bottom of the page, to "Create new user module". Give the new module a name (like "new_menu", for administrative use only) and a title (which will be displayed on the page, such as "Menu").

To specify as the content of the module the new menu that you just made just previously, under "Objects that can be included," see "Menus" and "phpLayersMenus". Your new menu will be listed here. Choose one, depending on whether you want a normal Tiki menu or a PHP Layers menu (the type whose sub-items appear in frames that overlap other page content), and click "create/edit".

Finally the module just made must be activated. Go up the same Admin Modules page to "Assign new module". In the dropdown list, find your new "new_menu" module (or whatever you named it). Choose a position for it, probably at or near the top of the left column, and for "visibility" choose "Displayed now, can't be unassigned". Click "assign." The other configuation items don't have to be filled in. You should then see the new module in your left column.

The menu you made can be further edited at any time.

Tiki is more complex than some other web software, and also is more configurable and flexible, which accounts for some of the difficulty in getting familiar with it. I hope I have answered your questions.

On the Admin Menus page, after creating your menu, you should see it listed, and it should have an icon like Image or Image , depending on the Tiki version. The mouseover will display "Configure/Options". This icon is clicked to get to the page to add menu items.

Hi Gary !
As you can see, I am a liar... that wasn't the last time I bore you, but I am struggling...
As seen in
http://www.eba-stats.com/ebawiki/tiki-index.phpQuestion
I succeeded to create something in the left menu, put it in the first place, but it has no link to any place and not the image of the folder...

and I did it, as you said me:

Name: eBAwords
URL: tiki-index.php?page=eBAwords
Sections: wiki
Permissions:
Group:
Type: Section

I activated the module at "admin > modules > assign new module"; but I did not do this "... and for "visibility" choose "Displayed now, can't be unassigned". Click "assign." I didnt find "visibility" at any place.....
Version downloaded 1.9.7

Thank again for all your great work...

Hi Roberto,

I'm glad you're still trying.

I can see that the "new_menu" module is displaying. But the problem seems to be the content of the module. Is the content of this module (when checked on the Admin Modules page) something like:

{menu id=45}

or

{phplayers id=43 type=vert}

(The number might be different, but either "menu id=" or "phplayers id=" should be used.)

-- Gary

new_menu at
http://www.eba-stats.com/ebawiki/tiki-admin_modules.phpQuestion
has no {menu id=45} or {phplayers id=43 type=vert}
parameters and rows are empty

Assigned Modules
Left Modules name order cache rows parameters groups action
new_menu 1 0 10 edit up down x
application_menu 2 0 10 edit up down x
quick_edit 3 0 0 Registered edit up down x
adsense3 3 0 10 edit up down x

In the application_menu i found
{menu id=42}
in Data

In the new_menu
in Data I wrote
Basketall Encyclopedia
because the program asked for me to fill the data....

How can I know which menu id is the new_menu ?

Remember that I did not do this "... and for "visibility" choose "Displayed now, can't be unassigned". Click "assign." I didnt find "visibility" at any place.....

Now I pressed on Use Menu and added
{menu id=49}
in Data after
Basketall Encyclopedia

========

I deleted all the done, and I did all the process anew, pressing on Use menu and added
{menu id=50}
and that is what is.....

> In the application_menu i found
> {menu id=42}
> in Data
>
> In the new_menu

Here you don't input text. Rather, you input something like {menu id=XX} or {phplayers id=XX type=vert}, where "XX" is the ID number of your new menu.

> How can I know which menu id is the new_menu ?

After you make the new menu, you can see it listed in the table at the bottom of the Admin Menus page. Note its ID number in the left column.

Really, we're so close on this. 😉
