what do you mean exactly by 'not working'?
I am using tw 2.2 and I too have noticed that the challenge/response authentication doesn't work exactly as I expected. When it is enabled, the login box module does not work anymore. If you put in the correct username and password, it will tell you that your login is incorrect ans ask you to go to the login page. If you put the same username/password in this login page, now situated in the center panel ( not a module), then you log in fine.
IMO, it is annoying to have the email address field in the login box. It gives the users the perception that they need to enter their email address to log in, which is not true, but then they are annoyed at all the credentials they have to supply.
