Go to a Wiki Page

Is anyone aware of a wiki plug-in or code line I can put in a wiki page that would allow a user to key in the name of another wiki page into a dialog box and then take the user to that page (instead of having to key it into the URL dialog box at the top of the browser)? I don't want a menu or pulldown, just the ability to key in a page name.

How about the "search wiki page" module - {module module="search_wiki_page" notitle="y"} . I didn't test it to see how well it meets your needs, though.

Thanks for the idea, Gary. But, the search wiki page module won't work for me. I don't want the user to see a list of pages to choose. I just want to provide a dialog box for them to enter the name of a wiki page and then "go to" it. Seems like a basic function, but alas...

NateSakany,

Yes, it may sound like a basic function - but allow me to argue with you and ask whether it is too much to expect your users to know the EXACT name of a wiki page?

Correct spelling, upper/lower case, any punctuation... all would have to match precisely. For most websites with lots of pages, some form of search, TOC, or navigation is more user-friendly than what you are describing.

As Gary points out, this function already exists within the Search module. Tiki provides a "type-ahead" feature (similar to Google's search box" to help users find specific page names.

Hey guys, thanks for the input. My intended purpose is to only grant access to a wiki page to someone that has the 'key' I provide to them (which in essence is the name of the wiki page... for example "mmx8987"). Since Tiki is "What You Can See Is What You Can Access" this is a simple way for me to provide 'exclusive' content to some members (through special email notifications) that is not available to general members. Sure they could edit the url, or I could just provide them with a full url link to the page in the email notification). I was just looking for a simple way to provide them with a dialog area after they have already logged in to enter the secret 'key' (i.e. page name) instead of fumbling around trying to edit the url dialog box. I don't want a search function which is going to give users the opportunity to search for ALL kinds of pages I don't even want them to know exist. I don't want a TOC because, again, I only want this information provided to those I choose to notify. Sure, I could create a special group to add users to, then condition the display of this stuff by whether they are members of the group or not. But, THAT is what I'm trying to avoid... the administration of adding each user to a group (users who get these notifications are administered by my separate CRM which sends the email notifications).

So, this is a matter of elegance for the user (balanced with my marketing/communications system). I was just hoping that something as simple as a 'go to page' function was available in a program as sophisticated as Tiki. I'm not trying to be difficult. I'm just thinking about my customers ease.

Now, if there were only a simple way to create a dialog for a user to add them self to a single group (without having the option to choose lots of other groups I don't necessarily want them to have access to) then I could go with the conditional display of pages based upon a group. Failing finding a way to do that, the 'go to page' idea seems the easiest solution.

I'm sure open to other ideas about how to solve my problem. I know just enough to be dangerous many times...

Nate,

Thanks for that explanation, gives us a better notion of your objective.

I have never been a big fan of Security-by-Obscurity - which is how I would describe your methods. "If they don't know it's there they won't find it."

However, assuming you're not trying to protect some secret-squirrel stuff, I agree that lightly obfuscated protection mechanisms have their place. If your users generally lack the sophistication to unearth stuff that you don't want them to find, wouldn't you be just as happy with the solution you described above: send them an email with the direct page URL hidden beneath a pretty "Your Secret Key" label?

Security by Obscurity... love that handle!

No, the world wouldn't end if someone that wasn't intended ran across this stuff. I was just looking for a more elegant way to get them there.

I am interested in knowing about what I mentioned at the end of my last message (how to create a mechanism for a user to assign them self to a specific group of my choosing while not seeing other groups I don't want them to see in the election process), as this would solve some other problems for me as well. This has to be an election made after they register as a user, so can't go with the default registration group.

Seems like maybe using a data channel/profile might be an option, and I'm curious about the 'transitions' feature, but can't figure it out.

Not sure if I should start another thread or continue this one. I guess I'll wait and see if I get any more takers on this thread...

Thanks Larry!
