How to access the File Galleries VCS?

We are using TikiWiki version 12.x, and cannot figure out how to use the version control system for the file gallery. This was added in version 9.x:

https://doc.tiki.org/Tiki9#VCS

Also, this page (https://doc.tiki.org/File+Gallery+Config#User_parameters) mentions that new versions of a file can be uploaded.

So how does this work? When I try to upload a new file with the same name as an existing file, there are now two files with the same name but different file ids. At an absolute minimum, we need the id number to not change when a new version of the file is loaded - otherwise all links to the file (some of which may be external to the Tiki) will break! I don't see any icons in the elFInder file browser offering the ability to upload a new version.

I have looked under the admin home for File Galleries and have tried searching in the admin search box and have come up empty. What am I missing? How do I access the VCS?

Well it looks like this feature is hidden under list view, which operates rather non-intuitively.  If I have a folder called "Test" open and go from the default "Finder View" to "List Gallery" and then click on the "Actions" icon I can open that directory (although for some reason when I come back later I can skip this step), and then if I click on the "Actions" icon for the individual file I see an option to "Upload New Version".  And then it appears that an "Archives" icon appears if there are previous versions; this can be used to see older versions.

You're right. UI should be made better, more intuitive and accessible.

And documentation might need enhancemend. Although I prefer self explaining UI, cause we have so much documentation and it is anyway nearly impossible to keep it up to date.

In tiki-admin.php?page=wiki there is a preference called about: "keep file Id when new version of a file uploaded".

It is a simple tickbox, luckily active on default on new installations, if I am right.

Until some time in the past I had to activate that at every single installation - imho a very crucial feature.

Even today I check on new installations if it is really activ. It might be inactive by default on a very old existing website, which got upgraded over times.

Hope that helps.
