Plugin List - does Text Area 'Display Limit (List)' work?

In the Tracker field 'Text Area' there is an option to limit the number of characters for 'list' view:

Does this work with Plugin List? I tested but for me it did not do anything (but did work correctly on Plugin Tracker List). Maybe I missed some configurations?

Thanks,
Mike

HI Mike

Did you try it with format="trackerrender"?

Hi Jonny,

yes, the Text Area is set as 'trackerrender' because if not, then special characters are not displayed correctly in list view, for example the word 'don't' displays as 'don't'

Maybe if this configuration option needs a little work I should add it to the general bug report for all issues with LIST? (which I haven't done yet)

Hi,

I think Jonny (a developer) is right.

But it raise a user-experience (non-developer) issue that is coming back time after time.
Normal users (sorry Jonny 😉) don’t see what you see or the logic you see it.

When they set (way before they start with List) they usually expect to see the things the way they have set them (300char max, use real name, use translations, etc).

Now I’m not sure how to answer that UX problem.
"A" solution would be to use trackerrender by default but that’s quite radical...
Another solution would be to "make" people use the GUI and there add relevant warning.
Or may be, on save a dialog displaying some warning (be aware that; rebuilt index, format of things, etc)

Adding more warning in the doc may be not enough (and certainly not user-friendly).

Hi Bernard,

Per Victors recommendation, it would be better to use 'trackerrender' only where absolutely necessary:

"Please prefer _text version of the fields that have it over format=trackerrender as it is WAY faster. You basically have to render fields like status (for the icon) and itemlinks having links to other items. Besides that, most of the other fields have a _text version which shows the content you are interested in directly from the search index"

Given this guidance, it seems a bit odd that 'trackerrender' is necessary for Text Area just so
standard symbols display correctly

I understand and use (like Jonny’s recommendations).
My point is more educational and related to the user experience.

I’m not sure people have really access to those recommendations and if they are documented neither read them. ;-)
